Tulum Ruins, Mexico

A shorter post today, but equally as travel-worthy! While in Mexico, my family and I went to the Tulum ruins as part of a day-trip and it was amazing! We had a tour guide who guided us around the ruins and explained some of the history behind them as well.

The ruins, el castillo. The largest building in the city of ancient Tulum.

We started our time at the ruins by walking down the path from the parking lot while our tour guide spoke about the culture and significance of the plants and trees that surround the area of the ruins along with the structural and architectural style we were going to see when we went into the city. Our tour guide was of Mayan decent as well, which allowed him to also speak about his own culture, growing up in a mayan family and being one of the last speakers of the Mayan language.

When we got to the ruins, we had to walk through a tunnel, which opened up to the Tulum ruins in all of their glory. We walked from the jungle, into a cliffside city, overlooking the Caribbean Sea, with an abundance of buildings, open space, and history.

The tour itself was rather short, around 30 minutes. After our guide was done speaking about the most important buildings and architecture, he then allowed us to walk around on our own for about 30 minutes where we explored the historical landmark on our own and took pictures of the ruins and water below. There were iguanas around the ruins, which were the first ones I had ever seen in the wild, outside of a pet store, so that was pretty neat! I did get eaten by bugs while we were walking around, so make sure to wear bug-spray when you are here!

When we were done meandering around the ruins, we returned to the gift shop, right outside the city, and grabbed some souvenirs, bug spray, and I grabbed a coffee from the Starbucks in the shopping center before we hopped back onto the bus to head to our next destination.

TLDR:

  1. The Tulum ruins are a must-see if you are in the area!

  2. Bring and use bug-spray

  3. Marvel in the architecture of ancient Mayans!
